Core Reading with Jazzles

Song and letter-based literacy learning for grades Pre-K to 1

The Core Reading with Jazzles is a comprehensive literacy development program for young children and ESL and special needs (e.g., Autism Spectrum, ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia) students that develops fluency with 75% of the high fluency words used by adults.  The animated songs for each letters of the alphabet and other interactive resources enable visual, auditory, and kinetic activities. It provides a balanced reading curriculum supporting over 1000 high fluency vocabulary words and it develops fluency, phonemic awareness, and familiarity with grammatical structures. There are over 22 different music styles used including rhythm and blues, rock, boogie, swing, Dixieland, country, mambo, Cha Cha and Latin Pasadoble. The course files include a Teachers' Manual with descriptions of resource files, sample lesson plans, specific lesson ideas, including dramatic performance ideas, math ideas, and craft ideas for each letter.

The central feature of the program is the use of contemporary song styles and alliterative lyrics to support key vocabulary development and other literacy skills including phonemic awareness, comprehension, decoding strategies for unfamiliar words, spelling, grammar, concepts about print, and capitalization. The use of rhymes and songs are well-established techniques for early language learning. Based on modern learning research and confirmed by studies to have strong effectiveness in developing reading skills, Core Reading with Jazzles offers an engaging early literacy program that succeeds with children of varied learning styles and needs.

Core Reading with Jazzles creates Letter Groups based on language learning research. The primary intended use of the full range of resource files is a teacher in a classroom setting or for home schooling. The 26 letters of the alphabet are organized into 6 Groups. Group 1 has the 4 letters that are used to form about 36% of contemporary high fluency English words.

Lesson Songs & Verses are organized in three Groups:

  1. Sing & Read:  There are four animation files: Song Animation, Karaoke, Reading 1, and Reading 2. The Song Animation file has a special letter song sung by Jazzles characters. The animation is coordinated with the scrolling verse such that the movements, behaviors and expressions of the animated characters coordinate with the verse.  Each song is prolifically alliterative, promoting phonological and phonemic awareness.
  2. Activities: Each letter has 7 digital Activities files. This offers a variety of ways to engage children. There are additional vocabulary words introduced by the activities. In total over 1000 words are covered.
  3. Extras: Each letter lesson has several Printable resource pages (for printing or projecting) – the lyrics pages themselves, craft pages, activity pages, read and color pages, a dictionary page, and a storyboard page. A simple Audio file for playing song’s music without animation can be used as background music while children do their activities. A fun ABC song for learning the letters of the alphabet is also in the Extras section.

Why CoreReading with Jazzles Works

Every teacher and parent knows that songs and rhymes engage children. They can do much more than that as research demonstrates that music is important for development of literacy, intellectual skills, and social behavior.

”Music has the ability to facilitate language acquisition, reading readiness, and general intellectual development, to foster positive attitudes and cover learning in middle school and high school; to enhance creativity, and to promote social development, personality adjustment, and self-worth.” (Hanshumaker, 1980)

“Rhythm and rhyme seem to magically increase learning, and singing frequently provides an emotional hook that can engage students to learn routine facts. Music also helps individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.” (Cigne, 1980)

“Music plays a significant role in enhancing a wide range of academic and social skills. For one, it activates procedural memory and therefore, creating learning that lasts.” (Dooley, 1993)

“Music offers great opportunities for communication and expression, for creativity and group cooperation – plus it’s good for the brain and can enhance learning and intellectual development.” (Weinbergen, 1993)
